It was delightful to see that the Dark Room was packed all day. At Smirnoff Equalising Music there were two different rooms for music: The Press Hall is the signature feature of the venue and hosted the mentors whilst the mentees performed in a more intimate space called The Dark Room. The 5000-capacity venue is a dream come true for those ravers who like to explore. The scale of Printworks must be seen to be believed – this venue used to be the biggest printing press in Western Europe. The 5000-capacity venue is a dream come true for those ravers who like to explore Printworks is a much-needed breath of fresh air (although being in central London, the air might not be that fresh). The UK rave experience is predictable – you pay £6 for a can of Red Stripe and watch a moody white bloke DJ in some cramped cupboard of a venue until the late hours. As well as gaining expertise from their mentors, the mentees were given the opportunity to play at Printworks, one of the most reputable music venues in the UK. The successful 10 DJs were paired with 5 of the biggest names in DJing: The Black Madonna, Nastia, Peggy Gou, Honey Dijon and Artwork. Smirnoff’s 2018 campaign goal was to find 10 of the UK’s undiscovered female and female-identifying DJs through a mentoring scheme. Smirnoff Equalising Music was established in 2017 to inspire the next generation of DJs, they aim to ‘escalate gender parity in the music industry by 2020’. Smirnoff Equalising Music at Printworks is something I will rave about forever. I usually leave a rave feeling physically exhausted and ready for bed, but this time I felt truly inspired- this was a special event at an unbeatable venue.
